Finding the Right Factory for Your Designs: Lessons from My Own Search

My Journey to Finding the Right Factory for My Designs

Searching for a factory to produce your own designs can feel like a gamble. The process often involves trial and error, along with significant investments of time and money, only to discover that a factory may not be the right fit for your brand.

Starting the Search

In 2011, while still working a corporate job, I set out to find a local factory for my leather goods designs. My approach included:

  • Googling “leather factories near me” every evening after work
  • Using lunch breaks to call each factory on my list

During these calls, I learned quickly that:

  • Some factories were not accepting new clients
  • Others did not offer the specific services I needed
  • Many had high minimum order requirements
  • Some charged very high prices just for making samples

I also needed a factory that operated on Saturdays, so I could collaborate with them on weekends.

Challenges and Setbacks

After visiting several factories, I decided to have samples made at one. The sample quality was excellent, but the factory would not provide a production price. I moved on to another factory, which also produced beautiful samples, but they were not interested in fulfilling my order either.

Building a Lasting Partnership

Something encouraged me to revisit the first factory. This time, I met face-to-face with the owner—a third-generation leather goods artisan who immigrated from the former Soviet Union as a teenager. His father had crafted Louis Vuitton bags in Europe, passing down the skills and passion for the craft.

Through patience and persistence, we began working together. Gradually, our collaboration grew into a strong partnership. Now, in 2026, our businesses have grown side by side, built on trust, collaboration, and a shared dedication to creating beautiful leather accessories.

How can you improve your chances of finding the right factory?

Research thoroughly, contact multiple factories, and visit them in person if possible. Be clear about your requirements, such as production capabilities, minimums, and timelines. Building relationships and communicating openly can help you find a good fit.

A strong relationship with your factory leads to better collaboration, trust, and long-term success. When both parties are invested, you are more likely to achieve high-quality results and grow together over time.

Is it necessary to work with local factories?

Working with local factories can make communication and collaboration easier, especially if you want to be hands-on during production. However, the most important factor is finding a factory that meets your needs and shares your values, whether local or overseas.
