Sustainable Leather Is The Future
Quite literally. As awareness of our negative environmental impacts grows, some members of the fashion industry have turned toward sustainability as a way to preserve the world for future generations.
CASUPO is proud to be part of that group. Here is a primer on sustainability and how it relates to leather production, followed by a guide on how CASUPO is leading the charge.
What Is Sustainability?
The UN World Commission defines sustainability as production or development “that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainability recognizes that “resources are finite” and argues that we should use them carefully. Put most simply, sustainability means caring for how we leave the world to our children.
How Does Sustainability Apply To The Leather?
The leather industry is a particularly relevant player in the sustainability debate because leather manufacturing has traditionally had fairly high environmental costs. Leather comes from livestock (whose rearing may cause deforestation or gas emissions) and leather tanning processes can use environmentally harmful chemicals.
The Leather Working Group (LWG) is a not-for-profit organization working to reduce or eliminate these environmental costs. LWG rates all kinds of businesses involved in the leather market, including suppliers, manufacturers and retailers, on a scale that grades their sustainability. Since 2005, LWG has certified over 1,000 member businesses as eco-friendly and sustainable -- and CASUPO is among them.
There is growing recognition that leather production can be sustainable. So, how does CASUPO fit into the picture?
CASUPO Is Dedicated To Sustainability
CASUPO is proud to make two different sustainable leather collections:
- The Reimagined Collection. CASUPO’s Reimagined Collection takes leathers that would otherwise have been sent to landfills and transforms them into gorgeous, handmade pieces. Each offering in the Reimagined Collection is made in an effort to reduce the amount of waste in the world.
- The Sustainable Collection. Every piece in CASUPO’s Sustainable Collection uses leather from responsible, eco-friendly tanneries. Sustainable Collection leathers and tanned naturally, with found fibers, and dyed by hand.
CASUPO products are completely biodegradable, use minimal packaging, and are handmade in Los Angeles. And CASUPO donates a portion of profits to FUNDANICA, an organization that provides healthcare to children in Venezuela, to help future generations there live their best lives.
Sustainable isn’t just a marketing buzzword: If we care about the world we leave to our children and grandchildren, we need to take sustainability seriously. Read more about how CASUPO is making an impact on the future here.
